Inspiration of the Month - Gretchen!

Experience Momentum | Inspiration of the Month, | May 01, 2018

It is a tradition of our organization to spotlight a client and their journey each month. This month we are pleased to introduce you to Gretchen.

Tell us about you and what motivates you:

"I am 56 years old and a competitive weightlifter and long time crossfitter.  I love being active and love being challenged to work hard to achieve new things in life, crossfit, and weightlifting. I am motivated by my desire to be the best I can be in all aspects of my life."

What has your experience been like working with us at Experience Momentum?

"My experience at EM has been amazing! I have received the best physical therapy and massage therapy both pre and post surgery in the past 2g.-hillman-2.jpg 1/2 years. The physical therapists and massage therapists at EM are the best in the business. I have had the pleasure of working with several great PTs at EM but have worked mainly Dr Geoff Gabler. He has been very positive and encouraging and a true friend throughout my rehab. He was positive and fun to work with from the painful beginning when I didn't really believe I could even get the use of my shoulder back.  When I was struggling to get my mobility back he recommended massage therapy to help with scar tissue. It was the massage therapy and cupping and Dr Gabler's graston therapy that helped me turn the corner. He encouraged me early on to get back to the gym and to email workout questions to him about what movements I could do and what I should sub for. He responded to countless emails and questions about what was ok for my shoulder and what I should hold off on. He gave me great exercises to build strength up in preparation for certain movements. And when I was strong enough to add those movements back in, he celebrated those victories with me. His guidance and positivity has been key in my very successful rehab. I am so grateful for the amazing treatment and kindness I have received at EM."

What obstacles have you overcome in working towards your health and fitness goals?

"I had to have major surgery to repair tendons in my shoulder 2 years ago that I tore on a missed 110lb snatch attempt. This was devastating to me emotionally and physically.  My doctor told me I would never be able to lift heavy again or do things like kipping pullups and encouraged me to give up crossfit. I had to work SO HARD at home and in my PT sessions just to get back full range of motion and then to start building back some basic strength. Fortunately I had the best PT in Dr Geoff Gabler who helped me believe I could get it back. He gave me all the right at-home and in-clinic exercises to build my strength back up to be competitive again in both weightlifting and crossfit. My lifts are back to numbers that qualify me again for international competition and I finished the 2018 crossfit open 53rd in the world in my age group. I am stronger in some things than I was before the surgery. Not only am I back to my all time PR snatch weight and kipping pullups but I can also do things I couldn't do before the surgery.  I have recently added bar muscle ups, butterfly pullups and legless rope climbs. It is such an amazing feeling to have overcome my obstacles with the help of EM and Dr Geoff Gabler and to be able to prove my doctor wrong.

g.-hillman-1.jpgExperience Momentum will donate $250 in your name to the 1% For The Planet non-profit organization of your choice. What charity did you choose to give your winnings to, and why?

"I chose the 1-90 Wildlife Bridges Coalition for my charity because they have a positive impact on helping save the wildlife in the I-90 corridor."

A fun fact about yourself:

"A fun fact about me is that I love to garden and grow unusual fruits and vegetables and flowers."

Your favorite quote:

"My favorite quote is "NEVER QUIT!" It came from a friend early on after my surgery when I was in a lot of pain and feeling like I would never make it back.  It was what helped me decide to fight to get back to what I love and believe me when I tell you IT WAS SO WORTH THE FIGHT!"
