June Inspiration of the Month - Angie!Experience Momentum | Inspiration of the Month, | June 01, 2017
It is a tradition of our organization to spotlight a client and their journey each month in our newsletter. This month we are pleased to introduce you to Angie.
Tell us about you and what motivates you:
"In 2011, I weighed nearly 300 pounds and was a complete couch potato. Working with EM, I managed to lose 80+ pounds and somebody asked me, “What are you going to do with this new body?” Who would have thought that one question would launch me into where I am today: Training for an Ironman. My life since 2011 has been a non-stop rollercoaster and I wouldn’t have it any other way."
What has your experience been like working with us at Experience Momentum?
"I started PT with Shanon in 2005/6 before EM was around. In 2011, I came to EM because I’ve been receiving the newsletters for years. I was not disappointed. I started PT for my knee and then stayed on using their nutrition services and group classes. I cannot say enough about this place. They gave me my mobility back. They’ve helped me with weight loss. They pushed me out of my comfort zone. They gave me a community of people I call friends."
What obstacles have you overcome in working towards your health and fitness goals?
"Knees: I had surgery in 2016 for a twice-torn meniscus. My doctor told me I probably shouldn’t run anymore and I should give up on my Ironman dream. Let’s just say, we agreed to disagree. With the help of Blake, Geoff, Shanon and many others, my legs are doing great and my knee is happy. Ironman Arizona 2017, here I come!
Thoughts: When things get tough, I usually end up on the side of a mountain, in tears, ready to throw my bike over the edge... I was on a supported bike ride where at mile 95, I was looking up at this 13% grade hill and I broke down. I found the smallest patch of shade and as I sat there, I thought, “No way. Not happening. I’m done.” An angel swooped in and gave me the most delicious watermelon I’ve ever tasted and the coldest bottle of water. He gave me the encouragement I needed. I knew what I had to do. I wasn’t going to let my thoughts control me. I picked up my bike, looked up that hill and went for it. Although it was not the ride I wanted, pushing through and finishing it was the confidence I needed to do that ride the next month.
Food: In 2011, with Dan’s help, I lost nearly 80 pounds. After not completing Ironman and tearing my meniscus in 2015, I gained “some” weight back. With the help of Heidi tweaking what I eat, I have lost 25+ pounds since January. Food is tricky for me, but relying on Heidi to help me work through cravings as well as nutrition on long brick days has been instrumental in helping me not only lose weight, but also maintain my endurance and strength."
Experience Momentum will make a $250 donation in Angie's name to a 1% for the Planet charity of her choice. What charity did you choose to give your winnings to, and why?
"I choose the Pacific Northwest Trails Association. I love hiking. In March, my multisport team, Stōke, volunteered to clean up the Paradise Valley trail system and let me tell you, it’s a lot of work to maintain the hiking and running trails we all so love in the PNW."
A fun fact about yourself:
"I volunteered at a Chimpanzee Sanctuary in college. I knew sign language and was able to communicate with them. It was an amazing experience."
