October Inspiration of the Month - Joanie!Experience Momentum | Inspiration of the Month, | October 01, 2017
It is a tradition of our organization to spotlight a client and their journey each month in our newsletter. This month we are pleased to introduce you to Joanie.
Tell us about you and what motivates you:
"My name is Joanie, I have always lived in the PNW, and I love the fall and raining days. I love fitness, nutrition, and working out but mostly riding my bike. I have always been an avid rider, but put it aside over the past years to focus on kids, family and career. I volunteered with Pacific Little League for 11 years coaching and working with kids. There is nothing I love more than helping kids get excited about sports and physical activity."
What has your experience been like working with us at Experience Momentum?
"In October 2015 I suffered a severe back injury that lead to an even worse infection. My injury required surgery and I ended up spending 110 days in the hospital, with 6 weeks in inpatient rehab. I had a total of four surgeries and was unable to walk or stand. There were days that I felt I would never walk again. I started working with Geoff at EM in 2016. I was completely frustrated at the lack of progress I was making with my previous physical therapist. When I started working with Geoff I was still walking with limitation and a limp. I did not have full range of motion in either leg. I still had several limitations with daily task and was unable to walk up and down stairs. Geoff was supportive, encouraging and I started seeing improvement with my first visit. My experience with Geoff and the staff at EM has been amazing. I have regained my strength, and have been able to return to all my previous activities, those that I was able to do before my injury. Thanks to Geoff, now for the first time in two years I feel that I can reach my dream and complete my first Ironman. I am continuing to work toward my goals with the help of Geoff, Blake and Heidi. With their support, encouragement and tough love, I have been able to regain not only my strength but the belief that I can do anything."
What obstacles have you overcome in working towards your health and fitness goals?
" I have always been physically active; from volleyball, racquetball, to track and softball. Bike riding is my passion and is something I have always done until kids, career and family took over. In 2014-2015 I started riding my bike outdoors again - 100+ miles a week and competed in three triathlons the summer of 2015. I had started training for my first Ironman, which has been a dream of mine for years. After my injury the reality of my limitation and recovery changed daily. Working with Geoff and Heidi has really helped me overcome my physical and mental limits and I am able to see my dreams of competing in an Ironman again."
What charity did you choose to give your winnings to, and why?
"I would like to have my donation go to Bike works. My passion is riding beyond the physical activity riding more and using cars less is good for the planet, and encouraging young people to focus on activate that supports health and the planet is why I choose this charity."
Your favorite quote?
"I do not have a favorite quote, but I love Rich Roll. His approach to life, family, nutrition and training is what I strive for everyday! This is a post he had that I reflect on daily: "PATIENCE. PERSISTENCE. PERSEVERANCE. These terms are not sexy. They’re hard. Sometimes ugly. And they will never trend on twitter. But if you embrace the ethos they embody with everything you have, they will love you back, never let you down, and pay dividends you can’t possibly foresee."
